Perhaps the greatest reference on Imperial Russian Numismatics is the Corpus of the Grand Duke Georgi Mikhailovich. The 11 thick volumes contain many hundreds of pages of fascinating documents and commentary, and were originally published in Russian at the end of the 19th Century. While some of the work was later translated into French, so far an English version has been missing. We think an English reference would be valuable to the serious but non-Russian speaking student of the subject.
Using traditional methods, translating the Corpus would be a truly enormous task for any individual. Today, however, we have available to us the power of the internet and the 'wiki' collaborative website model, the most well known example of which is wikipedia.
Our plan is to take the Corpus and begin to break it up into pieces which will then be posted here along with space underneath each piece that will allow project members to submit or modify a translation. The wiki model allows version comparison and reversion if needed.
This is no small project. There will be an enormous amount of work for the contributors (volunteers needed!) in getting the Russian text posted here piece by piece, as well as keeping the whole project organized. It is hoped that the translators will also be kept busy! and the project will likely last for many years.
